Conor McQuillan <conorjpmcquillan>
"Now available in Technicolor"

<<For my darling sister.

I'm studying Medicine in the world's oldest medical school in Trinity College, Dublin. I also have other stuff I like to do. I like to think it keeps me normal, sane, and relatively lice-free.
I'm TCD AfroCaribbean Society's secretary (again) this year (a hat-trick), but I still haven't turned into a leggy blonde. Tough break. I'm also on the ComedySoc committee, basically to make my life more like Scrubs. Or is that the other way round...
Do I look like I could tell a lie, even if I wanted to?
(Photograph may or may not resemble actual Conor, depending on time of year. Name correct at time of going to print)

  • On The Radio (uh-oh)

Every wednesday from 7.30pm on www.trinityfm.com or every 3rd week on 97.3 FM within about 50 yards of Trinity (no really, the transmitter is ridiculously weak - the average burp causes interference) my good friend Conor Darrall and I have a radio show, with the somewhat risqué title 'The Conor(s) Show'. Trust me, it's never been done before...

A new radiogram show for the scummy masses of Trinity College Dublin with the "Two Connies" described by The Rev. Gregory Bartney as 'lovely, clean-smelling young bucks', our frequent charity work first brought us to the attention of TFM. Intrigued by the contentious (some would say bullying) sexual tension between us, the radio cats promptly decided to lock us in a room and put us 'on air'

See what all the fuss is about on 97.3 FM (in Dublin) and online at www.trinityfm.com

    Call In: 00353 18963883
    Text: 53377 + TFM
maybe even join the facebook group... The Conor(s) Show

    Items to look forward to:
    -The News
    -Darrall O'Laughs
    -Dr Conor's Advice
    -Nuclear Holocaust Survival Tips
    -Lovely Lovers Love Song
    -Conor's Hippy Hoppy Rapucation
    -The World of Otters
-The Emotional Relationship Problems of Robots (they're human too, after all)

Musically, we'll have a mixture of new hits and classics, from Datarock to David Bowie, with a taste of The Everly Brothers thrown in for good measure.

  • Consolers Of The Lonely?

The late, great Bill Hicks used to implore any members of his audience unfortunate enough to work in advertising or marketing to go home and kill themselves. He joked (I assume) that they contributed nothing to society or the world and that they were, in fact, working for the Devil. I reckon Bill would be tickled Barbie Pink™ at the thought of one of the best-known new rock bands of the past three years releasing an album with neither fanfare nor gushing praise pouring forth from every critic in every music rag hitting the streets for a month before a single over-priced album hit the record stores.
The Raconteurs, alt-rock’s supergroup du jour, are doing just that. Any day now you’ll hear the first single, ‘Salute Your Solution’ and reviews will no doubt start filling papers, but having released the album (worldwide) on a Tuesday, the band have deliberately eschewn first-week sales figures, all in an attempt (according to their website) so ensure that your first contact and experience of the album is with your own ears – as long as you buy it in blind faith, crucially.
This is nothing new, of course. Led Zeppelin garnered a reputation directly with their fans, rarely doing interviews and instead preferring to tour relentlessly. The Raconteurs were on the road for around a year with ‘Broken Boy Soldier’ and it did well in album sales (and critical reviews), so this latest move is a bit puzzling. Unless they weren’t particularly confident in the album, or perhaps they really do want to realise Bill’s dream of a world free of advertising. Or perhaps Jack White knows he has a loyal fanbase at this stage.

I downloaded the album, and I have listened to it a couple of times, but in keeping with the band’s wishes I’ll hold back on a review for a few days so you can listen and decide for yourselves, if you want to.

  • Early morning bulletin

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova have won their Oscar. I won't do the Irish thing and begrudge Glen his success. But that uppity little Marketa...(kidding)
It was the only one of the nominees for best original song that I'd heard and that makes it a winner in my eyes/ears. As far as I can tell, they're the only winners who haven't been dragged backstage to record a special 'thank you cam' clip for the oscar.com website, so they're partying hard obviously.
Daniel Day-Lewis won the oscar for best actor, but is still a largely boring and self-obsessed person.
Over 40 Shia pilgrims travelling to one of the most important festivals in the Shia Muslim calendar have been killed in a sectarian suicide bombing in Iraq.
Nader is going to run in the US presidential election apparently. Hopefully Hillary will bribe him out of it, and then lose. Otherwise Senator John McCain is pretty much guaranteed to be the 44th President of the United States of America.
Which won't be ALL that bad, compared to say...Huckabee.
Speaking of elections, TCD SU sabbaticals are up for grabs. I'm leaning Conboy/Byrne/Foley/Allen...and genuinely haven't decided on the presidential vote. Though I have ruled out RON.

And finally, I'm being woken up every so often by the smell coming from my living room floor.
No, it hasn't become an open sewer. Not yet.
No, there isn't a decomposing body. Not any more.
Some idiot 2 or 3 floors up (and yes, I hope you're reading this. With tears in your eyes. From the even greater stench in your flat) left a kitchen tap on last night. It flooded the sink. The sink overflowed onto their floor. The water seeped through the floor and ceiling below, dripping onto some innocent student's floor, saturating it and seeping through to the ceiling below, from which that in turn dripped onto another innocent student's floor. Having ruined another floor, the water seeped on relentlessly, hungry for ever more unconventional sponges into which it could seep.

    And it found my ceiling.

And the water, filthy now with accumulated dust and minerals from centuries-old brickwork, brown and odious, dripped forth, onto my living room carpet. And couch. And nearly the TV. Damn.

The dripping has subsided. Despite having left windows open to the chill north winds, the smell persists.

I bought some air freshener (vanilla and magnolia, it was all I could find at 2am), and I'm not happy with how it mixed with the original stench.

And now, the waiting game continues. The smell, and the smeller. Locked in olfactory combat.

But yes, well done Glen and Marketa.

The Likely Lads was a hit British sitcom created and written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. Twenty episodes were broadcast by the BBC, in three series, between December 1964 and July 1966. However, only eight of these shows have survived (see below).

This show was followed by a popular sequel series, in colour, entitled Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, broadcast between January 1973 and December 1974; and, in 1976, by a spin-off feature film The Likely Lads.

Some episodes of both the original Sixties series and the Seventies sequel were adapted for radio, with the original television cast.
